Crawling cut back

Effective immediately, major crawling will be cut back by our news crawler. This means that only a select few of our sources will actually be crawled.

This is a temporary measure aiming to cut back on the server load. As CassieNet News doesn't really do anything at the moment, we can't justify giving it server space on a server that is overloading when it doesn't generate any revenue.

I love the project and hope to press forward with it but right now it has to take a sideline.

In order to maintain some sence of archives the following sources will still be crawled:

# News.com
# Wired.com
# Boston.com
# Scotsman.com
# BBC News
# Washington Post
# Reuters
# Yahoo News
# MTV News

No other sources will be crawled for the moment though if this does not reduce server load we may begin crawling all sources again soon....

Hello to you

Well, wow. We finally reached out 100,000 news stories target. In fact we are now at 113,000 I think.

It's great to know that CassieNet News is really starting to become a news archive, even if the stories are a little limited.

Of course the end result of CassieNet News is to turn it into a news search engine. That is step 2 once we have a decent sized archive and it is gradually getting there....

For the hell of it

Well I may as well make a new post. There has been some troubleshooting going on and we are pleased with how CassieNet News is going. The march to 100,000 archives stories continues.

Thanks to everyone who submitted RSS feeds, CassieNet News really has the potential to become a useful research tool. Well we like to think so anyway....

More landmarks

Recently CassieNet News reached 30,000 news stories! The next landmark we are looking for is the big 100k though. That said, even know we are too scared to check the size of our database ;).

Our main landmark now though is that we have reached 100 providers (or at least 100 different feeds as some providers offer more than one). So CassieNet News is developing nicely we recon....

We've hit the 10k!

Well it has finally happened. With out crawler working to get more and more news sources, we have reached the not too shabby total of over 10,000 stories indexed into our database!

Hopefully CassieNet News can continue to develop into a real archive of information. Considering we haven't been crawling that long and already have so much I think shows real promise to what CassieNet News can achieve.

Anyway enough of me patting ourselves on the bac, the search for new news sources must go on....

and the beat goes on

Although there is a lull currently in site development we are still working hard to improve it, that at the minute being adding news sources.

Thanks to the launch of the new xmeltrut.com fansite, One Tree Hill News, that provided us with an extra source and a day or two ago we raided the sources DevShed had to offer....

Hey look, we're not dead

Wow, here I was thinking that we would never post on this thing again and next day, hey look we are writing a new entry. Well I am, everyone else is actually doing work like coding and such lol.

Anyway we added Channel 9 to the sources, it is a pretty cool blog and video thing from MSDN (Microsoft Developer Network) although it would be much better if Robert Hess would post more....

Improvements as the night draws on

It may be getting well past standard working hours were most of the CassieNet coders are located but there are a few of us, including myself of course, still working on the site.

Our most recent improvements have been to work on the sources page which now gives you more information about the amount of articles indexed.

We have also added a new latest headlines page which you can view your news three ways - normal, like on the homepage, iframe, where stories are loaded into a window below the news and dynamic where you click on a story to instantly open it on the same page. Cool!...

Yet more cool changes

Well we have been coding all day. I realise what time the clock says but it is like 7 hours behind our timezone ;). Anyway, we are trying to get as much of the development done now before another project consumes our attention.

The latest additions including the ability to browse the sources using an A-Z system which allowed us to reduce the huge list on the homepage. Who can say, we may still add a view all sources list again later.

Have you noticed these posts have got longer? Anyway, the other recent addition to the site is the ability for us to alter how you get each sources RSS feed. Plus we have loads more additions to add to the site soon!...

Some kind of grand opening

Well things have gone very well! We have the main blog page up and the pages to display each blog entry and even an RSS feed and an admin section for posting new entries, all very flash. So all in all the development has gone quite well.

The next thing we have to do on the list is add the RSS feed to CassieNet News's news crawler so we can begin indexing our own content :D. I am sure we will be spreading the RSS feed round the rest of the network too just to show off....
